collage doodles + paintings

a series rooted in play, color, and texture

I started this series in response to creative block. At the time, I felt paralyzed by the lack of time/energy to create and the overwhelming choices of what to make. So, I created a process by limiting my choices. I made rules about my method of creating the “collage doodles.” The rules were as simple. Use magazine cuttings with interesting textures and colors to create an abstract composition.

.
As I continue to practice the process and experiment, the rules change in response to what I do and don’t like about the compositions. I started off with a very simple color palette and now I like to play with a variety of colors. In several of the earlier ones, I used pieces with recognizable objects, but now I lean into abstraction to better emphasize the focal point of color and texture. Now, I’m exploring geometric shapes instead of organic shapes. With every new iteration, I find something different.
