The Magic of Drums: Why Rhythm is Medicine for the Soul

Drums have been calling to me since middle school.

When I was a kid, playing an instrument was a required part of our school curriculum. More than anything, I wanted to play the drums! But my parents weren’t on board—they thought it was “just a phase” and steered me toward the clarinet instead.

But my love for rhythm never left me. A couple of years later, I asked again, and finally, they gave in. That year, I spent all my birthday money on a 5-piece drum kit.

I was obsessed. I took lessons, played in a neighborhood rock band, and loved every moment of drumming. But as I grew up, I left the drums behind. I moved out, went to college, pursued graphic design, and eventually let my parents give away my drum kit. I convinced myself that drumming didn’t have a place in my life anymore…

Until a few years ago...

A Full-Circle Moment

At the time, I recently left my career in graphic design to become a coach and breathwork facilitator. A few weeks before my final certification test, I went to a Reiki session with my friend Felicia. I was in a deep meditative state when she began to drum. The sound was rhythmic, grounding, and powerful—it took me even deeper into a trance.

At that moment, something clicked. This was how the drums would make their way back into my life.

Drumming wasn’t just about playing music—it was a healing tool. And when paired with breathwork and meditation, it became an even more powerful catalyst for transformation.

After that Reiki session, I knew I had to integrate drumming into my work. That’s how Breath & Beats was born—a class that combines the power of breathwork with the grounding energy of rhythm.
